Just to make it easy, The Declaration of Independence

IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Wake up!- An introduction‏

So here is where we get real. I want to be honest with my readers and let them know they are not alone so before I begin my new series "Wake up!" I would like to give a short introduction.

Up until a few years ago I was one in the same with most people. I believed what I saw on the news and thought I knew everything. Yes, I have always liked to prep, but I had no more reason behind it than swine flu or a stray hurricane. After getting interested in politics and what I thought was "really going on in the world" I found out about a fella named Obama.

Like a god, he gave strong, moving, speeches. He made the youth rise up to take their place. Change! We demanded. It's time to abolish the ways of the old and let the young decide. Our bodies, our minds, our time. Oh, but how easily I (and some of you) were deceived. We had forgotten another man who had the same idea; to set the youth on fire. That man was Adolph Hitler, and you know how that turned out. But to return to my story, I stuffed envelopes for his campaign, I answered the phone at his local office, all while thinking I was doing something big. I thought women had the right to choose, guns killed people, and religion was a joke.

I was wrong, way wrong.

And I was asleep. But now I'm not. I am still learning and searching more everyday. And aren't we all asleep to the ways of the world sometime in our lives? We are sure there is an Easter bunny until we see mom sneaking around with the brightly colored eggs. We know there is no God until we see a miracle. We walk in darkness not knowing it's as simple as reaching up for the switch.

So, as we go on this journey of waking up let's remember that the point is not to make people who don't know or won't believe what's going on feel stupid. Its to shed some light and wake them up. And while some of these issues may seem controversial or let's face it, like conspiracy theories, I ask you to keep your minds open. Do your own research and decide what you believe. I'm by no means an expert but I will tell you this, a close friend once told me "the only stupid questions are those that don't get asked." So don't we owe it to ourselves to ask some hard questions even if the answers scare us? I for one, don't want to be left saying "why didn't I?" or "how did I not see that coming?" So let's all of us, just reach up and flip the light.

And PS, all that stuff Obama said about change is true. The second we stop thinking "I'm just one person" and come together we can make a difference. Your first assignment is to find a copy of the Declaration of Independence and see what our founding fathers had to say about abolishing a government that has gotten out of hand. The Basics Part Two- The Twenty Dollar Method‏

Food storage is a huge subject, with dozens of ways it can be accomplished. Some buy giant bags of beans and rice while others stack cans of soup. Each way has it's own pros and cons but today I am going to focus on the way I do it. I, like a lot of people am on a budget so my prepping has to factor in my wallet. Also, I enjoy convenience and variety so I don't plan on buying a hundred pounds of pintos or white rice. If one was to do that they would have to eat that item before it went bad or could be gotten into by pests. That to me, is like going to the store and getting a bucket filled with corn flakes. Sure I would survive but it's gong to get old and stale pretty fast. I prep in a way I like to call the 20 dollar method.

The Twenty Dollar Method
Most people buy food on a budget but a slide of twenty dollars in either direction is not too big a deal. If it is, then find somewhere else to get it, your fast food budget, your movie budget, whatever. Set 20 bucks aside a week for prepping and head to the dollar store or a affordable grocery store such as walmart or aldi. I prefer the dollar store because you would be amazed what you can get for $20 there. Then, split up your budget accordingly.

Example:
$20 for prepping= $10 for food, $5 for supplies, $3 for medical, $2 for anything else.

Remember, this is just a guide. If you have lots of food shift more money to medical or other supplies. Once that's set up you know how much to spend now you just need to know what to buy. Some major food staples are:
+Beans
+Rice
+Canned vegetables and fruit
+Sugar
+Salt
+Flour
+Fat
+Protein
+Oats
+Coffee or Tea
+Pasta (italian, egg noodles, asian)
+Dairy
+Convenience Foods
+Water

Some examples of supplies could be:
+Light (flashlights, matches, glow sticks, candles, lighters)
+Shelter (tarps, rope, duct tape, emergency blankets)
+Tools (tools, gloves, nails, and the like)
+Storage (paint buckets are 2 or 3 bucks at walmart)
+Hygiene (TP, wipes, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene, antibacterial wipes)
+Cleaning Supplies (bleach, vinegar)

Medical items are a great investment but most of the basics can be easy to forget:
+Band aids
+Pain Medicine
+Cold Packs
+Antibiotic Ointment
+Herbal Medicine
+Gloves
+Alcohol and Peroxide

Anything else is just that, anything else you may think of. Base this on your family's needs, location, or wants:
+Sun Block
+Bug Spray
+Candy
+Books
+Stationary (pens, paper, crayons, markers)

The list could go on and on but the point is to get you thinking about your family's needs. As a last example I will give what I purchased last week with my $20 at the Dollar Tree.
1 family sized can of spagetios
1 jar of peanut butter
1 box of crackers
1 container of oat meal
1 vegetable oil
1 shelf stable milk
1 can of chicken
1 can of tomatoes with Italian seasoning
1 large container of idolized salt
1 bag of beans (mixed soup)
2 pair of work gloves
1 flash light
1 package of matches
1 tarp
1 bottle of ibuprofen
1 bottle multi-vitamin
1 package of sterile gloves
1 package of butterscotch candy
1 sticker book

So as you can see, you can do so much with twenty dollars and if you stick to it you will have a large amount of preps to rotate out with your everyday items. See the basics part 3 for eating what you prep and prepping what you eat to learn more about rotation. Until then,

The Basics Part One- The bug out bag.

The bug out bag, get out bag, or "ready set go" bag as it is called in our house, is one of the most vital tools preppers can have in their home. If I was to suggest to someone who has never prepped before and might want one thing that they can do to be prepared today it would be a BOB (bug out bag's initials.) In most of the "survival" situations we face today a bug out bag is what we want. A simple bag loaded with all we need to survive for 72 hours, or 3 days. Not only are BOBs good for getting out of a situation, but if you have no other preps you should be able to live out of your bug out bag for 3 days at the least, and if you plan properly it could help you longer than that. Imagine if there was an earthquake in your area and power was shut off, or if a hurricane came through and the damage was worse than expected. After you run out of the beannie weenies and juice boxes you picked up at the store a few days earlier you can crack open the old BOB. You will be safe in your home instead of needing to go to some overcrowded, scary, and lawless, shelter.

So how, you might ask do I get one of those BOBs? I have seen them on the Red Cross website and they are expensive! Easy answer, make it yourself! All you need is a good book bag to start, and remember this is only for one person, each family member needs their own bag, including any young children. Here is an example to get you started:
My BOB (the mom)
+A change of clothing (something comfortable but also durable, jeans, a long sleeve tee and a sports bra)
+3 days worth of underwear and socks (I like clean underwear, but hey, that's just me)
+2 washcloths and one hand towel (I don't think I will be able to take a bath in those first few days, but I will want to be able to wash my face)
+A pair of tennis shoes tied to the outside of the bag (a simple pair of no names from walmart cost me $15)
+A simple dollar store first aid kit augmented with a few items such as triple antibiotic ointment, an entire bottle of ibuprofen, allergy medicine, and an entire bottle of anti diarrhea medicine (never underestimate the seriousness of developing water or food borne diarrhea in a survival situation)
+Water, this can be in bottles or if you can afford it many survival supply websites sell what look like juice boxes but are actually long term water storage containers (everyone is different so figure your needs and add just a little extra)
+A flashlight and extra batteries
+A few glow sticks (kept in their original package)
+A lighter
+A decent pocket knife or multi tool
+A whistle
+A space blanket (is great for heat and signaling, and in its original package is usually the size of a deck of cards)
+A bandanna (I never go without one, and nether should you! but that's another blog)
+5 trash bags (hundreds of uses, trash, waste disposal, use in conjunction with your space blanket as a sleeping bag)
+A roll of duct tape
+A rain poncho
+An entire package of individually packaged antibacterial wipes (you can get a 24 pack at the dollar store)
+Toiletries (a travel toothbrush/toothpaste kit, a small liquid soap, tissues to double as toilet paper, and feminine care products)
+Bullfrog (a popular sunblock/insect repellent combo to save space)
+Some SPF chap stick
+A book or puzzle book
+A list of your emergency contacts, a local map, your out of state contacter info (we will discuss this in another blog), and a list of local shelter sites/evacuation routes, all in a sturdy Ziploc bag.
+Another Ziploc with an individual picture of each person in your group with their stats on the back.
+A simple mess kit
+Food
Of course, food is where it gets tricky so I'm going to say this; 3 meals a day for 3 days plus snacks. You can get those high calorie meal bars but they are (for lack of a better word) gross. If I'm already scared, cold, hot, or stressed out I don't want a meal bar to be all I get all day. I want decent food I'm used to and I want it easy to prepare. So here is my suggestion, check out the following videos of how to make your own MRE's (meals ready to eat kits) and decide what works best for you. Along with enough MREs for three days I highly recommend one extra thing, a few packs of peanut butter crackers, they will fill you up and if added to your other foods they can often buy you an extra day.

Great video, I think the idea about keeping restaurant condiment packets for homemade MREs is great, it saves money and eliminates waste.

And yes, I know I forgot something, even at the time of creating this post I know I forgot something important. The truth is the best way to create a BOB is to decide what YOU will need. I don't have a baby so I won't need diapers. My blood sugar gets low sometimes so I will take some extra food and some hard candy. I don't have any medicine I take daily, but if you do by all means ask your doctor for an emergency one month's dose, explain your reason and it's likely he will help, provided it's not a narcotic. So let me know what you have in your BOB or if you think of anything I forgot, add a comment, you might just help someone.

Oh that’s nice, Ben and Jerry’s have a new flavor, I do love Ben and... Hold on a second, the dow dropped by four hundred and sixty eight? What?
Now when I started this blog I had to decide if I should talk about issues like the government and the economy and while it may be easier to avoid such sticky subjects there is one thing I can’t avoid and that’s the nature of the prepper. Preppers for the most part are informed, if not overly informed. We seek the truth. We do so with a vengeance and truth be told, the economy and government make a HUGE impact on if our preps will be needed past the occasional winter storm. So why not have it all out?
Yahoo news reported that an economist from Wells Fargo said the following today "The probability of going back into a recession is higher now than at any point in the recovery" Also, in an unquoted note "the chances of us slipping into another recession are 35%"
Now it's time for a little section I like to call "really?" with prepgirl
Really, we are in a recovery, really? Because things don't seem to be getting any better here. Now I am no fancy shmancy "economist" but really? Our chances of sliding into a recession we are already in are just 35% really? REALLY????
I mean maybe I should be worried about this, get some gold or prepa.. Wait, the whole cast of Jersey Shore is going to adopt a baby together? Oh who cares about stocks, the government will keep taking care of us, now somebody get me a TV!

About Me

While there are many subjects I want to tackle with this blog I guess some introductions are in order first. My name is Lesley although from this point on with my blog I plan to go by prepgirl. I'm in my late twenty’s and I am married with two great kids. I now live in the gulf coast area of Florida with my family. I am pretty new to the prepper community, watching the numerous youtube videos, commenting on forums, and reading other blogs. I have had a love for prepping since I was young though, and I have been "putting away" for a while. I have a distinct memory from about the age of 8 or 9 when a bad winter storm was headed our way. Everyone in the area (including my family) headed out to get the usual milk, bread, and spagetios. Once the family was home and settled in I had a realization. What if the power goes out and we need lights? What if we have to leave and we don't have anything packed? What if one of us gets hurt? Immediately I rounded up some of last year's backpacks and put in each a change of clothing, toothbrush, and a stuffed animal for the kids, I set them by the door and made everyone put their shoes in front of their bag. After all that, I rounded up the flashlights, candles, matches, a first aid kit, and batteries and put them on the counter where they would be easy to find if the power went out. And guess what happened? The power did go out and we did have to leave, but we knew were everything was. Getting to a shelter that had some heat was so much easier because we were prepared. There were plenty of times after this that a storm passed over with no need for those supplies. The book bags stood by the door, the candles lay unused, but I felt so much better knowing they were ready. So cut to a "few" years later, here I am, watching the videos and thinking “hey, I have something to add to that”, or writing 3 page long forum posts I know only a handful of people will see. So I decided to start my own blog to get what I wanted to say out there. My plan is simple; I want to do a "what I'm thinking today" post as often as possible with "special topic" posts at least weekly. Also, I will be referencing other great blogs, videos, or radio shows I think are worth mentioning. So here we go, I hope this site will be interesting, challenging, and above all helpful, in your daily lives, and in your preparations for tomorrow.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to prepping now, a blog about, well, prepping now. Aside from the obvious topics such as what to prep, how to prep, and when to prep, there are many subjects I would like to discuss. While the word prepper or survivalist brings a lot of images to mind, there are some new images I would like to add to the mix. Where one thinks of a grumpy old man in full camo chewing on bark, I would like to add a young woman who keeps an emergency bag in her car. Where one would normally think of yet another old man in full camo shooting at people for getting near his 'supplies," I would like for you to think of the father of three who can (thanks to his well thought preps) invite the people next door over after a storm for a hot meal. Simply put, prepping is vital, prepping is smart, prepping is obvious, and prepping is NOW. Now is not too late to think about the future. Now it is time for the young to decide to wake up and be ready. Now is the time for us to choose our fate. Will you be the one who is ready when the storm hits? Will you be the one who can care for your family after your preps run out? If you can’t answer yes to these questions then NOW is the time.
 Of course you could be the grumpy old man; there is plenty of bark to go around.
